WHAT IS VEGANUARY?

WHAT VEGANUARY MEANS AND WHY YOU WILL BENEFIT FROM VEGAN SKINCARE

Veganuary… We find it as difficult to pronounce as you probably do, yet another trend besides Dry January or Movember? We don’t think so!

WHAT IS VEGANISM?

Veganism, or the now widely used English term ‘vegan’ does not seem to be a temporary trend but a lifestyle that is gaining more and more followers. It means that you do not consume animal products, as long as that is practically feasible. It goes a step further than vegetarianism, where vegetarians do not eat meat or fish, but do, for example, eat eggs or dairy, or wear clothing made of leather or wool.

Someone who lives vegan basically refrains from eating or using something from an animal in all ways, including by-products of animals such as honey, beeswax or wool grease, and of course all products that have been tested on animals.

WHY IS VEGANISM ETHICALLY IMPORTANT?

Without going too deeply into people’s moral and ethical considerations for living vegan, it is worth underlining that in many cases where animal substances are used, these animals do not have a good quality of life, or die a brutal death. Vegans are usually very conscious for the benefits of animals and the environment.

IS VEGANISM GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT?

Indeed, going vegan is also good for the environment! Producing meat and dairy products increases carbon emissions, which damage our earth's atmosphere and contribute to climate change. To produce these types of products, with the highest carbon emissions coming from beef, requires more finances and causes higher carbon emissions than plant-based products.

Although eating meat is not unnecessarily unhealthy, cutting down on consumption (or cutting it out of our diets completely)  reduces several cardiometabolic risks that comes with eating meat with high fat levels. Going vegan is becoming more and more normal.

IS VEGAN SKINCARE BETTER?

We believe so, for several reasons.

Choosing to use vegan skincare means you are guaranteed to be putting healthy, natural ingredients on your skin. On the whole, vegan products have less synthetic chemicals, which can clog your pores and cause breakouts or irritation. They are also more sustainable to use, as all their ingredients are bio-degradable (coming from the earth themselves). Therefore, vegan products can be suitable to all skin types, even with those that deal with acne, eczema or rosacea.

Vegan skincare is also cruelty-free!

Are animal substances used in skin care or cosmetics? Yes! Honey, beeswax or lanolin (wool grease) are regularly added to creams or other skin care products. Carmine is also often used for the red color in lipsticks. Carmine is made from the shells of cochineal aphids, which are killed alive and ground so that the blood gives off the red colour. Doesn’t sound lugubrious?

BEST VEGANUARY PRODUCTS?

All products of Witlof Skincare are deliberately made vegan.

Precisely because animal ingredients are often used in creams (wool grease, honey, beeswax), we are very proud of our vegan facial creams and especially of our Refreshing Eye Cream. This eye cream is a real pot of plant power! It contains an extract of paracress, a plant that has a relaxing effect on the skin and ensures that you (using twice a day) have measurably fewer deep lines and wrinkles after 28 days! Maximum Plant Power!
