Winter skincare? Your dry skin needs more than just oil!
Do you also suffer from dry, dull, and flaky skin in winter? Do you think you need to use a richer cream? That is only partly true.
Your skin loses moisture
In winter, your skin has to deal with a major seasonal change. Temperatures drop, winds become harsher, and the air contains less moisture. Under these conditions, water evaporates from the skin more quickly, causing it to feel tight, dull, or flaky. Moisture loss is the main reason for dry winter skin, and replenishing and retaining moisture is the solution.
Indoors, your skin also has a hard time. The humidity inside is often even lower than outside. Heating creates dry indoor air that continuously draws moisture from your skin. Because you spend many hours a day indoors, your skin barely gets the chance to restore its natural balance.
Your skin produces less sebum
In addition, your skin’s own functioning changes. During colder periods, the skin produces less sebum. This natural oil normally forms a protective layer that locks in moisture, but when sebum production decreases, the skin loses moisture, suppleness, and protection more quickly.
Water makes skin more vulnerable
Our winter habits also play a role. We tend to take hotter and longer showers, which may feel comforting but can be harmful to the skin barrier. Hot water and harsh cleansing wash away natural oils and leave the skin more vulnerable.
Your skin needs extra moisture
The solution starts with restoring the moisture balance. Using a hydrating product such as the Hydrating Calming Lotion helps to immediately replenish lost moisture and soften the skin. A lotion like this calms the skin and prepares it for further care.
After that, it is important to lock in that moisture. The Rich Facial Cream forms a protective layer on the skin with nourishing fats and ceramides, supports the repair of the skin barrier, and helps prevent further dehydration caused by cold and dry air.
What else?
What else can you do besides hydrating and using a richer cream? Make sure you drink enough water or (herbal) tea, and increase the humidity in your home. This can be done simply by placing bowls of water on the radiators, showering or cooking without turning on the extractor fan, and keeping ventilation short and efficient. Avoid showering for too long or with water that is too hot, and apply an extra layer of cream before going outside.
